FAQ Q1. Why do women join sororities? What do women do in sororities?A1. There are many reasons why to join a sorority. The main reason, however, is for friendship and sisterhood. Being in any type of club makes it much easier to make friends, but sororities are unique because they aren't based on any particular interest, rather they are built values, traditions and rituals. This means that when a woman joins a sorority she meets people with a wide variety of interests and talents. Furthermore, sorority life gives you the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities. At Delta Phi Epsilon, we generally participate in any number of different sporting events, community service activities and fundraisers, workshops on social issues, unique resources for studying purposes, mixers and formals, and other events that the entire Greek system participates in. In short, sororities give the opportunity to make new friends while being actively involved and engaged in the campus community. Q2. What do I need to know before I join? A2. No matter what Greek organization you join, there are certain membership and financial obligations. Please make sure that you are able to fulfill these requirements. D Phi E has its own unique history, as does each of its chapters. The diverse history and ideals that each greek organization values can often help in deciding if you have found the right sorority to fit your needs. Joining a sorority is a personal decision that you alone must make. A sorority provides a unique combination of scholarship, leadership, community service and most of all, a family away from home. If you choose to join, a world of friendship and lifelong sisterhood await you. Q3. How can I join your sorority? A3. There are two ways to join a sorority at Drexel: 1. Formal Recruitment: Formal Rush takes place every Fall Term. If you are interested in joining a sorority, look for registration stations at various sites on campus. During recruitment you will have the opportunity to meet women from all five of the Panhellenic sororities at Drexel. Formal recruitment involves 5 different events spread over the course of approximately 2 weeks. You are able to meet with members of all five sororities during orientation and house tours, then you pick your top four that you wish to visit again. After meeting with those four during round one, you pick your top three choices. After round two you select your top two sororities, and after the preference events of round three, you finally choose which sorority you would ultimately like to join. The last day of recruitment is known as bid day, at which time women are offered a "bid" - an offer to join a specific sorority. If you accept this bid, then you spend the rest of the evening involved in activities with your new sisters. 2. Informal Recruitment: Throughout the academic year some of the sororities at Drexel will participate in what is known as informal recruitment. At this time, women are given the opportunity to join a specific sorority without having to participate in events held by the other sororities on campus. Not all sororities participate in informal recruitment. Women who are interested in joining a sorority during the informal recruitment period should contact the recruitment chair of the sorority they wish to be involved with. If the sorority that you are interested is participating in informal recruitment, they will keep in touch with you about fun events and activities that you can participate in in order to learn more about the sorority and to get to know the members. If they are not holding informal recruitment continue to stay informed of the future Formal Recruitment opportunities. Q4. Why does it cost money to join a sorority? Are sororities only for 'rich girls'? Why would I want to buy my friends? Isn't it really expensive? A4. Sororities are definitely NOT only for 'rich girls'. Sorority members come from all sorts of different walks of life and financial backgrounds. Sorority membership can initially seem quite expensive; most groups charge new members somewhere around $500 to join. However, there are many different payment plan options that will make this cost easier to bear. Furthermore, this cost isn't charged in order to limit membership or to "buy friends", but in order to pay up front for events and activities that members have the opportunity to participate in while involved in the sorority. Included in membership fees is the cost of member, chapter, and housing unit development and long range planning, as well as various other things. In other words, the cost of membership is an upfront fee for the events the sorority participates in every year. Q5. Must I give up my friends, family, boyfriend, hobbies and job to join? A5. NO. We respect your personal life & interests, as well as your individuality. We encourage personal development & expression in any way, shape or form. We feel well rounded women make great members. Q6. What do I do if I receive a Bid? A6. If you are extended a bid, you have a twenty-four hour period where you may decide to accept or decline the bid. When you receive a bid following Fall, Winter, or Spring Recruitment, you are invited to a Bid Day. If you decide to accept your bid, you register with the Office of Campus Activities and meet with the New Member Educator. Q9. What if I dont receive a Bid? A9. If you do not receive a bid, dont worry! We encourage you to go through the next recruitment process. The reasons for not being extended a bid vary from person to person. In most cases, we have not had enough of an opportunity to get to know you or for you to get to know us. Even if you do not receive a bid, we will continue to invite you to activities until we are able to make an appropriate decision regarding your potential bid. Q10. What is a New Member and how long is the New Member Period? A10. A new member is a woman who has accepted a bid and has been pinned. A new member has most of the same privileges as an active sister. DPhiE runs a meaningful, purposeful, goal-oriented new member education program. The new member orientation is a six week process where new members learn the history of Delta Phi Epsilon, attend meetings, and participate in PEARL activities. The new member orientation concludes with initiation into Delta Phi Epsilon International Sorority. Q11. What is your policy on Hazing? A11. Hazing is strictly forbidden. Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created, intentionally, that endangers the life of a new member or has the potential to cause bodily injury, that produces metal or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Hazing is not a part of responsible Greek life and we oppose hazing in any way, shape or form. Q12. Do you party all of the time? A12. No! It is a common misconception that sororities and fraternities do nothing but party. Although we do have social events and mixers, we also participate in other activities. These activities include philanthropies, fundraising, academics, and participation in Drexel Greek Life. We pride ourselves on our diverse offering of activities. Q13. What academic benefits do you offer? A13. Internationally, Delta Phi Epsilon offers scholarships and grants every year. All active members are encouraged to apply for these scholarships and grants in April of each year. Locally, Delta Epsilon does not currently offer scholarships or grants. However, we do offer academic support. We are currently building class and teacher guides, test and assignment files, and scholarship programs. We are Drexel's #1 academically ranked sorority. We offer study buddies, mentors in your major and academic achievement recognition. Your grades will improve when you join DPhiE.
New Member Education New member orientation provides an introduction to Delta Phi Epsilon, as well as a glimpse of the future benefits and responsibilities of your lifetime affiliation with our sisterhood. You will learn about Greek life in general and the purpose, values, traditions, organizational management, expectations of membership, and the leadership opportunities available to you as a member of Delta Phi Epsilon. The New Member program is a six week period, with a focus on different aspects of the sorority each week. New Members participate in educational programs that discuss the values and traditions of DPhiE as well as PEARL Programs based on the 5 S's: Self, Scholarship, Sisterhood, Service, and Social. A unique component of these programs is the inclusion of STAR Sessions: Sisters Targeting Academic Resources. D Phi E is dedicated to informing women about the academic resources available on campus that enhance studies as well as continued excellence in your academic performance; therefore our New Member Orientation is designed with your studies in mind and is geared to enrich your overall Drexel experience. Anti-Hazing Policy Drexel University's Anti-Hazing Policy:Hazing activities in any form are prohibited. The University supports and will strictly enforce the Commonwealth of Pennsylvanias anti-hazing law, Act 175 of 1986. This law defines hazing as any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health of a student or willfully destroys or removes public or private property for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in any organization operating under the sanction of or recognized as an organization by an institution of higher education. The term shall include but not be limited to any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other substance, or other forced physical activity which could adversely affect the physical health and safety of the individual and shall include any activity which would subject the individual to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which could result in extreme embarrassment, or any other forced activity which could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual, or any willful destruction or removal of public or private property. For the purposes of this definition, any activity as described in this definition upon which the initiation or admission into or affiliation with or continued membership in an organization is directly or indirectly conditioned shall be presumed to be forced activity, the willingness of an individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding.In addition, the University adheres to the Fraternity Executives Associations definition of hazing: any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off University or fraternity/sorority premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule.
